Matthew Glover - Mr. G's Liquors, Noblesville IN
Just as the Johnnie Walker brand motto states “Keep Walking” our recipient of the Johnnie Walker Scholarship has shown determination, enthusiasm and tolerance to overcome a challenging experience. His ability to adapt to a new culture helped him survive in China for a summer as he sought enrichment of his studies in East Asian Languages and Cultures. With efforts to familiarize unique and different customs and traditions, he found strength within himself to adapt to challenges presented to him.
2008-2009 Smirnoff “Clearly Original” Scholarship Winner
Tanya Barton - United Package Liquors, Indianapolis IN
The Smirnoff “Clearly Original” Scholarship honors those who contributes original ideas, and is a clear leader. This year’s recipient is an employee at United Package Liquors, Tanya Barton. Clearly original for our industry, her major is Biomedical Engineering. And Tanya is clearly on an original path from the broken home she started from.
Her desire is to work in the development of new devices, algorithms, and systems that will make major advances in biology and medicine. A letter or recommendation came from a frequent customer of UPL who noted the respect from her fellow co-workers and the many satisfied customers she has assisted. I know we’d all like to have more employees like her.
2008-2009 Captain Henry Morgan Scholarship Winner
Gretchen Pinnick - King’s Keg, North Webster IN
Just as Captain Morgan was a charismatic leader with an indomitable will to succeed and a larger than life spirit, this namesake scholarship was established for those who demonstrate their leadership by dedicating their time and energy to worthwhile extra-curricular activities.
Here are some of our winner’s extra-curricular activities:
- President and House Manager of Kappa Kappa Gamma at Indiana University
- A Riley Development Committee member for the IU Dance Marathon benefit for Riley Children’s Hospital where she works directly with Riley families.
- A Political Advocate for Middle Way House, a home for women of domestic abuse.
She attends Indiana University full time where an instructor’s recommendation told us that she is one of those constructive forces, with qualities of leadership, sensitivity to others, loyalty to the group, organizational ability and winning personality that rubs off on her peers and makes the class work well.
2008-2009 Crown Royal “Royal Achievement” Scholarship Award Winner
Jonathan Sandhu - Vineyard Liquors, Indianapolis IN
Jonathan is able to successfully balance accomplishments and achievements in the classroom with extra-curricular activities. In high school he was on Roncalli’s three time state championship football team, on the track team, on the student council and an active volunteer in the Lords Pantry all while an honor student.
In college he put these experiences to good use.
- He was appointed Health and Safety Director for Purdue’s Student Government.
- He served on a committee that developed creative solutions to renovate Purdue’s Recreational Facility,
- he is a representative of his fellow students on the Student Senate.
- and Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee.
It was in this role he accomplished a “royal achievement” by making textbook information accessible to students before the semester so students now have the option of obtaining books from other avenues that the university book store. He did this not with student protests or revolution, but by meeting with Purdue’s Provost, Dean of Students and Vice President for Student Services to find the most appropriate avenue to solve the problem.
It’s no surprise that he also has been on the Dean’s List for the past four semesters. He’s finishing his final year in studying Elementary Education, where we will be fortunate to have him leading our children into the future.
